MACP Project – MAPPING PERIPHERAL VISUAL ART AND CULTURE
The teaching, research, and outreach project “Mapping Peripheral Art and Culture,” certified by DGP CNPq (dgp.cnpq.br/dgp/espelhogrupo/5698738855883137), aims to survey and identify artists, artisans, groups, and art collectives located in peripheral areas of the state of Rio de Janeiro, giving visibility to their respective productions of symbolic assets. These mapped artistic and cultural productions highlight issues related to the construction of a peripheral territorial identity, which in turn reveals details about the existence of an alternative art scene, that is, “heterogeneous art circuits” that are difficult to grasp and should be investigated. Through the efforts of undergraduate and graduate students, scholarship recipients, and volunteer researchers linked to the MACP project, we have organized activities aimed at the external community, such as: free art workshops with the participation of artists, educators, cultural animators, etc., in addition to the regular offering of events such as: exhibitions, lectures, and seminars. In this way, we intend to give visibility to research that aims, in part, to discuss the dynamics of struggles, games, and disputes in the field of erudite production in the face of subsequent processes of institutionalization and autonomy of the emerging artistic field.
